Novak Djokovic is the champion of the Australian Open!
After a little less than 3 hours of play, the Serbian player won a record 10th title at the Australian Open, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas with a perfect score – 3:0 (6:3, 7:6(4), 7:6(5)).
Although the result may not look like it, Novak played a very demanding match against the Greek tennis player. While the first set went relatively “smoothly”, already in the second set Stefanos threatened with a more serious and aggressive game and a much more stable game on his serve. The Serb also kept his serve out of the opponent’s “reach,” but he also showed signs of nervousness and often sought advice from his professional team.
Novak’s visible nervousness did not result in a collapse, as Stefanos had a set point in the 10th game of the 2nd set, but the Serb kept his composure. In the end, the second set had to be decided in a tie-break. And there, as usual, Novak showed why he is the undisputed “king of tie-breaks”.
The tie-break started brilliantly on Novak’s side, with two mini-breaks and a score of 4:1 for Djokovic. However, the Greek came back, helped by Novak’s mistakes, and equalized the score (4:4). Novak’s answer arrived in the form of new mini-breaks for the final 7:4.
The Greek opened the third set with a break. But on the other side of the court, there was a different Novak – without nervousness, calmer, and in complete control. This had an immediate impact on the match, as the Serb quickly regained the break and regained control of the set.
Again, the set looked very even, as both players were confident in their serve. The tie-break came and Novak immediately established dominance. Mini-breaks and safe points on his serve for a quick 5:0. The Greek retaliated with one mini-break, but his attempts to stay in the match ended there.
Novak is the champion, he took the 22nd Grand Slam, equaled Nadal’s Grand Slam record, became Number One again, survived a difficult tournament riddled by a leg injury, and won after being banned from last year’s tournament…
It was evident how much all this meant to the Serb, how much of a burden he carried all this time. After his victory, Novak celebrated together with the members of his lodge, and we saw the great champion in full tears.
In the end, a remarkable comeback, a great victory, and more broken records. A perfect tennis Sunday.
